I love the Athletic! If you're a serious sports fan that appreciates thought proving articles that dive deeper behind the scenes of the sports you love, then that athletic is for you. In a media world filled with clickbait drama (looking at you ESPN) the athletic is a breath of fresh air.

The premier sports journalism website. The app works perfectly. My issue is with the standards of the website itself. Most articles feature a user comment section following the journalism. But The NYT/The Athletic not give the subscriber the ability to mute or block problematic commenters. The result is a barnyard full of trolls, swine, derelicts, and other assorted losers alongside thoughtful readers.

Adverts on podcasts for paid subscribers and doesn't function properly via car play either. Avoid.

Used to be an excellent app, but the podcast section is now borderline unusable. As a paid subscriber I now get the ads' version of every podcast, not the ad-free version I'm supposed to get. I know I'm not alone. I've also been unfollowed from every podcast, and had to manually re-follow them. Some aren't even searchable via the app and I had to Google them to find them again. It's all very shoddy for a paid subscription service, and the Athletic have made zero effort to communicate about it.

I've subscribed to the Athletic for 5 years. The introduction of adverts into their podcasts is the final straw. If they want to increase ad revenue they clearly don't need my subscription revenue anymore, so I'm cancelling.
